About This Course
This course will focus on frailty in older adults. Frailty is increasingly being recognized as a clinically relevant syndrome, and one that should be addressed and prevented. The course endeavors to raise awareness of frailty, and showcase that frailty can be preventable and reversible.
It will provide professionals with the knowledge to screen or assess for the presence of frailty. The course contents will also showcase a range of frailty tools that can be used, in a variety of settings, including social care, residential care, and occupational health, to primary and secondary care.
Audience
This course is suitable for people working with older adults, including professionals working in community care, residential care, nurses, general practitioners, social care and occupational health.
Learning objectives
- Describe the impact frailty can have on the well-being of the older adult
- Explain what frailty is
- How to screen for the presence of frailty
- How to assess whether someone has frailty, or is at risk of developing frailty
- Provide advice on how to prevent frailty, reverse it, or slow down its progression, with a particular focus on diet and physical activity
Topic Contents
The course will include videos, text and discussions on the following topics:
- Impact of frailty on the older patient
- Frailty, disability and comorbidity
- Scientific models of frailty
- Desirable characteristics of frailty tools
- Frailty screening versus frailty assessment
- Evaluating the most common frailty tools
- The role of diet and physical activity in frailty management
Organization and duration
The course is available for a period of two weeks. During this period, you can view the contents at your own pace. Items consist of videos, text and discussion boards, alongside relevant links you can explore. In total, it is expected to take around 4 hours to complete all contents.
Course support is available throughout the two weeks of the course.
Evaluation and Certification
Upon completion of the course and the final assessment a course certificate will be available to you.

Course Funder
This course is offered for free as part of a European project, 'FrAilty Care and wEll-funcTion' (FACET) and is funded by EIT Health. FACET aims to promote healthy ageing via prevention and monitoring of the frailty of older adults.
